The Grossglockner High Alpine Road has been an incomparable experience since 1935. The most famous of all alpine roads ends before the highlight of the Hohe Tauern National Park: the highest mountain and the largest glacier in Austria, the Grossglockner (3,798m) and the Pasterze.

On the ascent from 1,500m to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, you pass through all of the vegetation zones from the cornfields to the eternal ice, see http://www.grossglockner.com/

At the arrival point close to the glacier (Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe) one can walk along the easy Gamsgruberweg, fresh with many tunnels and artistic displays, or take the short train/elevator (Graltscherbahn) to arrive closer to the ice.

It is impressive to see how the glacier is melting down at a very high speed (some tens of meters per year), hurry up or the entire glacier will disappear before you can admire it!

Interesting expositions about the national park can be visited if the weather is getting very bad, or if one is interested in history, nature, geology, etc.

The visit requires a whole day, bring warm equipment with you!
