The Budapest Marathon, first held in 1984, follows a scenic route along both banks of the Danube and across its bridges, which separate hilly Buda in the west and the wide boulevards of flat Pest to the east.
The course is fast and flat, leading through the city center, past buildings which are part of the World Heritage.
There are more than 3000 participants on the marathon distance, half of the runners comes from abroad from 50 different countries.
The marathon offers 9 different distances, apart from the 42 km, runners can run a 30 km distance, run the marathon in a team of 3 or 5 runners, minimarathon (7,5 km), fun run (3,5 km), walking. Overall there are about 12 000 participants on the event.
